I remember having a conversation with a man named Roland from Holland. He shared how he once had testicular cancer. After several surgeries, the cancer is in his body was removed. This was obviously great news. But this got both of us talking as what we would do if we only had a short time to live. I think most of us agreed that we would make every second of our life count and live it out to its fullest. Of course we both agreed we would do anything possible to share Jesus Christ who offers us the only way, truth, and life to those that do not know Him.
It got me thinking though….why do I need a ruthless disease like cancer to live like that? My life is not much different than a person who has cancer. We are both going to die. It is not like my life on this earth is going to be much longer than the person that has a life-ending disease. If anything, the person with cancer has the greater advantage over me, as they know more accurately when their life is going to end. I don’t have that knowledge. As weird and messed up as this sounds, I should be living my life as if it will end soon. It blows me away to think how much of an impact could be made in the world through one person in the final month of their life. It makes me wonder how much God’s Kingdom could be advanced if those who love Jesus could live like that. I feel as though I should be living in a way where I only have a few days/weeks/months left to live, not because of the fear of death, but the knowledge that I will one day stand before God and give an account on the way I spent my life (The one that Jesus died for) on this Earth.
So what is it that holds us back from living like that? Even just for one day? What false securities are we holding onto? What fake cures are we injecting into our lives? What idols are wasting our time? What other masters are we trying to serve? To be honest, we all have cancer; and that cancer is sin. But if I knew this cancer had a cure and I had a chance to experience true life, why am I not experiencing this true life? More importantly why am I not sharing this cure to every person possible? These are difficult questions I have been wrestling with in my life.
